Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a condition of swelling and leakage of protein-rich fluid to your soft tissues (arm, leg, scrotum) due to blockage, damage, or obstruction of lymphatic channels that travel alongside veins and under normal conditions, return this leaked fluid to your circulation. Lymphedema is most commonly caused by removal of, damage to or radiation of lymph nodes as part of a cancer treatment. There is no cure for lymphedema, but it can be controlled. Dr. Fearmonti’s research specializes in better understanding this disease process. She is also one of few physicians trained in performing free lymph node transfers and lymphovenule bypass (transferring or re-connecting lymph channels to the circulation to restore flow) and has demonstrated promising results in select patients.
